FREEWILL - Can You Choose What You Want ?

Arthur Schopenhauer once said, "Man can do what he wills, but he cannot will what he wills." I agree with him, and I think this line explains most of how choice actually works in our lives.

Life is not a rigid, pre-written sequence of steps. We do make choices. But those choices are not fully open either. They sit inside limits set by biology, psychology, and society.

Take a simple example. You can love cricket and play it every day. That is your choice, and you act on it freely. But you cannot wake up one morning and decide to genuinely love something you have no interest in. The action is yours. The desire behind it is not something you picked.

So we have choices, but they are bounded by who we are. We all run on the same basic system of hormones, genetics, and brain chemistry, but each person's version is tuned differently. That tuning is the first and most basic limit on free will. It shapes what we want before we ever get to decide anything.

Understanding this creates a common misunderstanding: "Everything is already written, and things will happen no matter what."

I reject that completely.

Nothing is written. What exists is resistance. When you move toward something that goes against your nature, your whole biological and social self pushes back and makes that path costly. Most people drift away from those paths, not because fate blocks them, but because the cost feels too high.

This also does not mean you can sit back and expect everything to fall into place. The world runs on process. Results come from doing the work. Sometimes your effort creates unexpected side benefits, but those are bonuses, not the plan.

So when does life actually hand you a choice?

As a child grows up, millions of possible paths narrow down to a few. Many early decisions are not yours at all. Family and society make them for you. As you gain skills, education, resources, and independence, your range of options widens and more decisions come into your hands. The truly large decisions are rare. You get only a handful in a lifetime, so recognize them when they arrive.

SO randomness X biological being X society = your will.

And one more lever most people miss:

You cannot choose what you want right now. But you can shape what you will want later. The people you spend time with, what you consume, what you practice every day: over months, these reshape your desires. That is where real control lives. Not in a single moment, but in building the person who makes your future choices.

Summary

You have the power to choose. Life is not pre-written. But your choices are not unlimited. Your nature and your society narrow them. The real skill is recognizing the big moments when they come, and quietly shaping the kind of person who will face them.
